Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
