A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
